Jon Vickers Narrates Strauss: Enoch Arden, (Op 38)  (Richard Strauss)
VAI AUDIO, 1 CD: cat# 1179-2, $16.99

Strauss's great setting of the Tennyson poem for narrator and piano. The legendary opera star Jon Vickers makes his recording debut as speaker in this powerful and moving performance.

Enoch Arden
Music by Richard Strauss
Poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Melodrama for Narrator and Piano

JON VICKERS, narration
MARC-ANDRÉ HAMELIN, piano

In this lengthy poem, Lord Tennyson tells of the people of an English coastal town. He examines the potential for nobility of the human spirit, by revealing their collective and individual involvement with the life and death of one man.

Enoch Arden is a work of great beauty and should be heard by all who are searching for a greater purpose and meaning in life. It is "soul-satisfying" to be so powerfully reminded of the timeless truths of Love, Fidelity, Faithfulness, Patience and Steadfastness: indeed, all of the attributes which reap such joyous reward, through striving for the welfare of others while denying oneself; accepting the long haul while scorning instant gratification.
