•••••

This third volume in VAI’s historic series featuring the New York City Ballet in Montreal includes a newly discovered scene from Coppélia which was choreographed by George Balanchine especially for this telecast. It is danced by Tanaquil Le Clercq and André Eglevsky. The DVD also includes the first video release of Gian Carlo Menotti’s ballet-pantomime The Unicorn, the Gorgon, and the Manticore (or Three Sundays of a Poet). This beautiful and unusual work is a mix of oratorio and ballet, with a chorus describing stars Allegra Kent, Nicholas Magallanes, and Roy Tobias. The DVD is rounded out by a segment of scenes from Swan Lake in the Balanchine choreography and featuring Maria Tallchief and Eglevsky. Balanchine himself appears on screen in an interview with René Levesque, discussing the history of the New York City Ballet.
